Kieran | Biography · Facts & Quotes
Born Kieran Kyle Culkin in New York City on September 30, 1982, Kieran was the fourth of seven children born to Christopher “Kit” Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. Kieran’s very first bouts with acting started with small roles in theatre before he was yet enrolled in kindergarten. With two plays and a spot on a 30 second commercial under his belt, he auditioned for the role of Fuller McCallister in Home Alone at the age of 8. Director Chris Columbus taking a liking to the Culkin family went on to cast Kieran in his next two productions, Only The Lonely and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. In 1991 Kieran was cast as Mattie Banks, the young sibling of the Banks family in the classic Steve Martin and Diane Keaton series, Father of The Bride. This lead to another small roll in the Jean Claude Van Damme action, Nowhere to Run. In 1994 and 1996 Kieran finally landed his first lead roles, the first being the Christmas Story sequel, It Runs In The Family (later titled My Summer Story) and Amanda, a movie about a young boy who loses his vision after falling off a horse as a child. Neither movie had big releases in the US but the constant work proved to finally pay off when Kieran landed roles in The Mighty and She’s all That in 1998 and 1999. Kieran has said filming The Mighty was when he realized he loved acting. “Peter Chelsom was the first director to take me seriously.” At this point in Kieran’s career he began to take his acting more and more seriously. By now he was attending the Professional Children’s school in Manhattan, a high school for children in the arts which allowed him to take time off for work. After the release of She’s All That, in 1999 Kieran landed the role of Lexi in Music Of The Heart and Buster in The Cider House Rules, the film where Kieran has been quoted as saying he learned exactly what he wanted out of his acting career after working with and admiring Tobey Maguire, who has since been named Kieran’s favorite actor. 1999 also saw the release of The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns, after which Kieran didn’t work for two years until 2001 when he landed his first TV sitcom lead as Andy ‘Fish’ Troutner in the short lived series Go Fish. In 2002 Kieran starred in two films in which he felt he finally “grew up” as an actor, the first being the small independent film The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, co-starring alongside Emile Hirsch, Jena Malone, Vincent D’Onofrio and Jodie Foster. The second being Kieran’s most critically acclaimed role as Jason ‘Igby’ Slocumb in the independent film Igby Goes Down. Being Kieran’s biggest and most challenging role thus far into his career, in 2003 the Hollywood Foreign Press took notice and nominated Kieran for his first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. Never being a fan of the spotlight and quoted as “hating the game” in Hollywood by his brother Macaulay, Kieran has layed low the past few years since his last movie role and has instead opted to go back to stage acting instead. Spring of 2000 saw Kieran’s first major theatre performance, the role of Wilson in James Lapine’s The Moment When. In late 2002 he took the role of Warren in London’s production of This Is Our Youth, alongside Colin Hanks and Alison Lohman. In the Fall of 2005 Kieran starred in the off-broadway production, After Ashley, which ran at Manhattan’s Vineyard Theatre from February to April of 2005. After Ashley, written by Gina Gionfriddo and directed by Terry Kinney, also starred Anna Paquin, Dana Eskelson, and Mark Rosenthal. Kieran played Justin, a young man who witnesses his mother’s death and deals with her rise to fame in the media directly afterward. Kieran gained rave reviews for his portrayal as Justin and in 2005 received the Village Voice Obie (Off-Broadway) Award for best performance of the year. Today Kieran is preparing for his latest theatrical endevor, a starring role in Eric Bogosian’s subUrbia. Co-starring Diksha Basu, Jessica Capshaw, Michael Esper, Halley Feiffer, Kelli Garner, Daniel Eric Gold, Manu Narayan, and Peter Scanavino, subUrbia starts previews September 6, 2006 and will open on September 28, running through until October 29th.
