Lymelife

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

From Variety:

Alec Baldwin and Emma Roberts have boarded Derick and Steven Martini’s indie dramedy “Lymelife.”

Cynthia Nixon, Rory Culkin, Kieran Culkin, Jill Hennessy and Timothy Hutton are also joining the cast.

Martin Scorsese and Leonard Loventhal exec produce the project, which starts shooting next week in New Jersey.

Set in late ’70s Long Island, the coming-of-age story follows two families who fall apart when precarious relationships, real estate problems and Lyme disease converge in the heart of suburbia. The Martini brothers also penned the screenplay.

Baldwin is producing alongside Jon Cornick, Barbara De Fina, Angela Somerville and Michele Tayler.

“It’s a very personal story, and it’s something I’ve been trying to get made for five years,” said Derick Martini, who developed “Lymelife” under Robert Redford at the 2001 Sundance Filmmakers Lab. “I’ve done a lot in the meantime, but (the story) has always nagged at me. It’s a terrific feeling to finally see it through to its fruition.”

As part of the lab, the brothers shot seven experimental scenes from their script. Kieran Culkin appeared in the original scenes, but he grew too old for the role and will now play an older brother.

Baldwin, like the Martinis, is a native of Long Island and has been attached to the project for years.

“I didn’t know him at the time, but when I wrote it, I had his voice in mind,” Derick Martini said. “He’s hung in there through the ups and downs of funding.”

Baldwin will shoot the project concurrently with his NBC series “30 Rock.”

Before “Lymelife,” the Martini brothers won the Toronto Film Festival’s Discovery Award and the Milan Film Festival’s best film prize for “Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire,” which they wrote, produced and starred in. Their writing credits include the Buddy Bolden biopic “Bolden!” and the thriller “Selling Time,” which is in development at 20th Century Fox.

New Project!

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

CS: Can you talk about what your next project might be?
DiCillo: Well, I wrote something. It’s called “Americana” and it would star Willem Dafoe as the leader of a very small white militia group placed somewhere in the United States, and Buscemi plays his brother. There’s only about five or six people in the group and these two young kids, Kieran Culkin is going to play one of them, get swept up into this group, not because of the ideology, but because Dafoe is this very intense father figure to them. It’s a comment about what’s going on in the world today. I will just tell you one thing. How many times have we heard Bush talk about the No Child Left Behind Act? We’ve heard this, right? You know what it really stipulates? An act in there by a Republican senator stipulates that for any school in the United States to get funding by this No Child Left Behind Act, they have to provide the U.S. military with the names, the addresses and phone numbers of every single kid in the school, and the only way to opt out of that is to sign a little box on something that most parents never see. “No Child Left Behind” (is really) “No Child Left Out of Iraq.”

Icon picks up ‘Stanford’

Friday, May 11th, 2007

LONDON — Icon Entertainment Intl. has picked up international sales rights to Christopher McQuarrie’s upcoming feature project “The Stanford Prison Experiment.”

Pic, set to shoot this October, is based on the true story of Dr. Philip Zimbardo’s ground-breaking study of human behavior at Stanford U. in 1971.

Student volunteers were assigned roles as guards and prisoners in a mock prison, but the relationship between them degenerated so rapidly into abuse that Zimbardo had to abandon the experiment halfway through.

The movie, co-written by McQuarrie and Tim Talbott, will star Kieran Culkin, Paul Dano, Jesse Eisenberg, Charlie Hunnam, Ben McKenzie, Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum.

It’s produced by McQuarrie, Brent Emery, Mark Morgan, Guy Oseary and Talbott for Maverick Films, and by Bill Vince for Infinity Features. John Ptak of Arsenal, who brokered the international deal with Icon, is representing North American rights.

Pic will shoot on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, California, and in Regina, Canada. This will be McQuarrie’s second outing as a director, following his 2000 debut “Way of the Gun.”

He won the original screenplay Oscar for “The Usual Suspects” in 1996, and is currently working as a writer and producer on the Bryan Singer/Tom Cruise WWII project “Valkyrie” for United Artists.

24 hour plays.

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Kieran took part in The 6th Annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway yesterday. I would have posted something about it beforehand but I did not find out that he was doing it until pictures started popping up even though I have been following who was doing it for awhile now and his name was never mentioned. But anyway.

The 6th Annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway was a one-night-only benefit for Working Playground. At 10pm on Sunday night, 6 playwrights, 6 directors and 24 actors were gathered at the American Airlines Theatre and after everyone was introduced, the playwrights stayed up all night to write a 10 minute play. At 7am on Monday morning, the directors returned to the theatre to read the plays and cast them. The actors then arrived and rehearsals began at 8am, with tech rehearsals from 5pm-7:30pm and the show beginning at 8pm.

Others who participated in the event with Kieran included Anna Paquin, Gaby Hoffman, Sam Rockwell, Rachel Dratch, Liev Schreiber, Nia Vardalos, Rosie Perez, Lynn Whitfield, Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Berkley, Erika Christensen, David Cross, Matthew Lillard, Fisher Stevens and others.

You can find images from the rehearsals, curtain call, and after party in the gallery.
